This course is inspired by one of my students (Hey Evan!) because he wanted to learn Hey Jude as one of his very first songs. One thing that I found frustrating with my former guitar teachers is that all of them started with “easy” songs that I was just not interested in. It’s true that I didn’t yet have the skills to learn the difficult song I loved at the time. But I believe that it’s the teacher’s responsibility to break down a song into simple, doable chunks for the student. Now that I have students I’ve my own, I make it a priority to figure out how to take complex songs (almost all guitar songs are hard, btw) and transform them into doable pieces that a beginner can tackle.
In this course (level 1 and level 2), you will learn how to read standard notation (“sheet music”). This is a skill that professional violinists, pianists, etc. use to learn their repertoire.
The course is divided into two levels. Level 1 teaches you how to read rhythms and tablature. Level 2 teaches how to read notes and standard notation. Learning to read standard notation is difficult on the guitar – especially for students who have no musical experience from school or from taking piano lessons as a kid. Because of this, we start with tablature.
